Resegregation is the Point.
So our drunken affirmative action hire of a Defense Secretary has decided to put back a statue of a Confederate general. In doing so, he claims that he is honoring history. What he is doing, of course, is spreading racism. And he is just part and parcel of the project to re-segregate America.
The idea that honoring Confederate generals is somehow honoring American history is darkly amusing. Not only did the Confederates get their asses kicked (they did! They should have won, given the situation on the ground and the forces arrayed against the US at the time! But their own insistence on preserving slavery and vainglorious notions of what a real general did lead them to get their asses handed to them.), but they got their asses kicked in defense of slavery. They are world historical losers, suitable only for object lessons in how not to be good people. And yes, the Confederacy existed to defend slavery. But that, of course, is the point.
This Administration seems to operate under the belief that anyone who is not a white male got their position as a token hire. And they want to reinforce that notion at every turn. They have fired African American generals and female generals and other leaders with no explanation other than they were woke, at best. Often, they replaced them with white men who were demonstrably less qualified for the jobs. In the meantime, while praising traitors to the United States, Hegseth and other in the Administration have removed history, or tried to until the backlash, about anyone not a white male.
They have removed or tried to remove content about the Tuskegee Airmen and the Navajo Code talkers. Hegseth wants to rename ships named for people like Harriet Tubman, Harvey Milk, and abolitionist Lucy Stone, among others. Military schools, schools on base for the children of American service members, pulled books about the civil rights era, slavery, and the treatment of Native Americans. They tried to ban books from the Naval Academy on the Holocaust, slavery, and racial profiling. Obviously, the only history they care about is the history of failed, racist white men like Confederate generals.
But it is not just the military. The Trump Administration deal with Brown prevents the use of personal statements that talk about how students dealt with their race in everyday life. That’s right — overcome racism, and that is not relevant to your work ethic, talents, determination, intelligence, or ability to succeed. Trump’s administration canceled grants that studied why African Americans had worse outcomes in some case, especially around maternal health. Pro-life, apparently, as long as those lives are white. And, of course, they appear to have targeted female African American employees in their purges of government jobs.
The above list is just a small sample of the kinds of things that the Trump administration is doing. They have declared open war on anyone who is not a straight white male. Honoring traitors who defend slavery? Fine. Honor their opponents? Woke nonsense. They intend to force woman back into the kitchen, LGBTQ+ people back in the closest, and African Americans and other minorities back to the end of the line. We may not be able to stop them right now, but we must commit to undoing their harm.
The United States is not a white nation. It is built on the proposition that all people are equal. That is what makes American great, and Trump and his lackeys are attacking that directly. In the words of a great American, we need to let America be America again and return the outdated, bigoted ideas driving this Administration back to the ash heap of history with their Confederate heroes.
